School wins prestigious Enterprise Award with ParentPay inspired idea

14 Oct 2015

High flying students from Skinners’ Academy in Hackney have pitched their way to business glory after winning the 7th Mosaic Enterprise Challenge Grand Final. The result was announced at an event hosted by TV presenter and broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky in London on 23April.

The Challenge, supported by the Apax Foundation and Nectar Trust, is a national competition for secondary school students across the UK, designed to develop and encourage their entrepreneurial skills.

Mosaic was founded by HRH Prince Of Wales in 2007 to encourage young people from deprived communities to realise their talents and potential.

The students from Skinners’ Academy impressed the judging panel with their winning business concept, iRoundUp’, an ingenious yet simple system whereby students can volunteer to donate spare change to a nominated charity from electronic currency stored on their ParentPay dinner accounts.

In front of a capacity crowd, the students pitched their ideas to a judging panel including Claude Littner, visiting professor at the University of West London, Claude Littner Business School and candidate interviewer on BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’, Mohammed Amersi founder and CEO of Emergent Telecom Ventures and Perween Warsi CBE founder and CEO of S&A Foods.

‘iRoundUp’ certainly ticked all the boxes winning the top prize ahead of more than 4000 other students from over 100 schools!

After all that hard work the rewards were definitely worth it, as a result of the win the team has secured a £2,500 cash prize for their school and a £500 seed fund to start up their business. The students also had a tour of the ITN News Studio and The Bank of England followed by an exclusive tour of Clarence House.

When the Skinners’ team approached ParentPay CEO Clint Wilson for advice and support, he was blown away by the ‘iRoundUP’ idea commenting:

“It was obvious from the start that the students had thought carefully about their business concept. Simple yet effective, with a great opportunity to be scaled up, it was a clear winner. Congratulations to Skinners’ Academy and the iRoundUp Team, they should be really proud of their achievement.”

Mentor to the students, Brooke Greville, CEO of Gate Ventures said:

“All their hard work has paid off. This is a fantastic achievement for the students who really applied themselves and have approached this with real dedication and professionalism. This is a proud day for all of us and an unforgettable experience.”
